You can tell a lot about a distillery and its products from the people behind it. In the case of Surrey Copper Distillery, the husband and wife founders are nothing short of experts – true distilling nerds.
Copperfield vol. 1, their flagship gin, is a supremely high-quality spirit – rich with juniper and exceptionally smooth. The botanicals (Orris Root, Angelica, Liquorice, Coriander, Lemon Peel) are straight from the 1757 edition of the original distilling book, ‘The Complete Distiller’ – about as traditional as it’s possible to get. Katherine stumbled across this original recipe when building her distilling library, and resurrected it. You can even see the original 18th century scribbles on the inside of the bottle label.

In 1757, Ambrose Cooper published the first edition of The Complete Distiller, aiming to bring a touch of class to the opportunity that the 1751 gin act had brought about. 2 and a half centuries later, while browsing books to stock her distillation library, Prof. Katherine Smart came across a copy of it stuffed between 2 Dickens books and decided to resurrect some of the original recipes.
Volume 1 vapour infuses a range of botanicals, including juniper berries, orris root, angelica, coriander, lemon peel and many more to create a London dry gin with floral notes and a woody spice. You can even see the original recipe on the inside of the label.
